Creating and marketing your own product can be rewarding; it can also be a difficult, time consuming task that can end up in disappointment and time wasted; so if you go this route, make sure you take the time to do your research in advance and to do it well and right.
2) Your second option when starting an online business is to be an online consultant in an area that you are expert in and to charge a fee for your consulting services. That way you don't have to create a product, as your product is you.
This is a good option if you have expertise and experience in some area that is in high demand that people are willing to pay for. The challenge will be to convince people that you are truly an experienced expert, that your knowledge and advice is worth paying good money for, and that you are the person that they should seek advice from, verses the other established experts in your field.
If that's not the case, then the probability of failure will be high. You'll also need to know how to promote your consulting services better than your competition is promoting their consulting services, otherwise you probably won't make out well, and will again, end up wasting your time and efforts.
3) Your third option when starting an online business is to buy an existing business and to promote it online.
This is a risky venture unless you know exactly what you're doing.
You need to research the businesses you're considering purchasing carefully and extensively; you need to be sure you're dealing with a trustworthy business owner. To buy a business you'll need to invest a sizable amount of money up front, and you'll need to know how to make that particular business succeed. Otherwise you'll not only waste alot of time and effort, but also a sizable amount of money.
4) Your fourth option when starting an online business is to get into a new, rare, unconventional type of business, such as attempting to be a finder, an online deal broker, etc.
